We're Sailing to Break

the Siege on Gaza

We are a global coalition of civil society groups, grassroots organizations, and people of conscience committed to breaking the siege on Gaza. In the face of mass displacement, destruction, and denial of basic human rights, our mission is to mobilize peaceful, lawful action—through relief ships, medical aid, advocacy, and solidarity—to deliver hope, protection, and justice for the people of Gaza.

Freedom Flotilla

Why we are sailing to Gaza on the Global Sumud Flotilla

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) is a citizen-led humanitarian mission whose purpose is to break the siege of Gaza and deliver urgently needed aid—food, medicines, water—to a population under total blockade.

  • To sustain hope. Letting despair win is seen as allowing the continuation of ongoing atrocities.

  • Because the people of Gaza have been deprived of fundamental human rights: access to food, water, medicine, movement, shelter. These are presented as basic necessities threatened by the blockade.

  • To respond to legal obligations: the flotilla’s work is aligned with directions from the International Court of Justice in the case of South Africa vs Israel, which ordered Israel to allow humanitarian assistance.

  • A broad coalition of activists, humanitarians, doctors, artists, lawyers, clergy, and ordinary people of conscience from over 40 countries.

  • From South Africa, a diverse delegation (religious, secular, multi-faith) as part of the global effort.

  • The GSF is the largest flotilla mission to Gaza so far, combining efforts over land, sea, and air.

  • It builds on decades of resistance and international solidarity.

  • Though previous ships have been intercepted (e.g. the Madleen, Handala) in international waters, GSF insists that refusing to act is not an option if justice and humanity are to be defended.

  • The mission sees itself not just as a relief effort but as part of a wider movement for justice, human rights, and recognition that what is happening in Gaza amounts to more than war—it is genocide.

  • By sailing, the flotilla hopes to force accountability, galvanize public opinion, and pressure governments to comply with international law.

South African Sailing to Gaza

South Africa is
Sailing to Gaza

South Africa’s history of resistance to apartheid and its commitment to justice have inspired many of its citizens to join the Global Sumud Flotilla. The South African delegation is made up of a diverse group of faith leaders, activists, medical professionals, legal experts, and community organizers who see the struggle of the Palestinian people as deeply connected to their own past.

They carry with them the spirit of solidarity that helped dismantle apartheid at home, affirming that no people should live under siege or oppression. By joining the flotilla, South Africans are sending a clear message: the fight for freedom, dignity, and human rights knows no borders.

MOVEMENT PARTICIPANTS

Coordinators, organizers, and participants from the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition*Global Movement to Gaza, and the Sumud Nusantara have united under a common goal: to break the illegal siege on Gaza by sea, open a humanitarian corridor, and end the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people. This Summer, dozens of boats will set sail from ports around the world, large and small, converging toward Gaza in the largest coordinated civilian flotilla in history.
